Pharmacological Properties[edit | edit source]

Mometasone is a glucocorticoid, a class of steroid hormones that exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It acts by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor within cells, leading to the regulation of gene expression and a consequent decrease in the production of inflammatory mediators.

Therapeutic Uses[edit | edit source]

  • Mometasone is available in several forms, each tailored for specific conditions:
  • Inhalation: As an inhalation aerosol, mometasone is used for the long-term management of asthma. It reduces the swelling and inflammation in the airways, improving breathing and reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.
  • Topical: In its topical formulation, mometasone is effective in treating various skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rashes due to allergies. It helps to reduce symptoms such as swelling, itching, and redness.
  • Nasal spray: Mometasone nasal spray is commonly prescribed for the treatment of allergic rhinitis to control symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and a runny or stuffed nose.

Side Effects and Precautions[edit | edit source]

  • As with all corticosteroids, mometasone use can lead to side effects. Common side effects include headaches, sore throat, and nasal dryness or irritation when used as a nasal spray; cough and dry mouth when used for inhalation; and itching, dryness, or burning when applied topically.
  • More serious but less common side effects can include adrenal suppression, growth retardation in children, and the development of glaucoma or cataracts with long-term use.
