The Emblem of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official emblem of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Abkhaz ASSR), a constituent republic of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in 1937 and was used until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1992.
Design[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Abkhaz ASSR was based on the State Emblem of the Soviet Union, reflecting the common design elements used in the emblems of other Soviet Socialist Republics. The emblem featured a red star, symbolizing the victory of communism and the "world socialist community of states." The central element of the emblem was a hammer and sickle, representing the unity of the working class and the peasantry.
The emblem also included a rising sun, symbolizing the future of the Soviet people and the bright future of communism. The emblem was surrounded by a wreath of wheat, which represented the agricultural abundance of the republic. The banner below the emblem bore the motto "Workers of the world, unite!" in both the Russian and Abkhaz languages.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The Abkhaz ASSR was established in 1931 as an autonomous republic within the Georgian SSR. The adoption of the emblem in 1937 was part of a broader effort to standardize the symbols of the various Soviet republics and autonomous regions. The emblem was used on official documents, government buildings, and other state-related materials.
Changes and Abolition[edit | edit source]
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the subsequent declaration of independence by Georgia, the Abkhaz ASSR ceased to exist. The emblem was officially abolished in 1992, and new symbols were adopted to reflect the changing political landscape.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Abkhaz ASSR remains a historical symbol of the region's Soviet past. It is studied by historians and enthusiasts of Soviet heraldry and continues to be a subject of interest in the context of the history of the Caucasus region.
