The Emblem of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official emblem of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Mordovian ASSR), a constituent republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in accordance with the general principles of socialist heraldry and was used until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Design[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Mordovian ASSR was heavily inspired by the State Emblem of the Soviet Union. It featured the traditional symbols of communism and socialism, including the hammer and sickle and the red star. These symbols represented the unity of the workers and peasants and the guiding role of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
The emblem also included elements specific to the Mordovian ASSR, such as local agricultural and industrial motifs, which highlighted the economic strengths and cultural heritage of the region. The emblem was encircled by a wreath of wheat and other crops, symbolizing the agricultural foundation of the republic's economy.
Motto[edit | edit source]
The emblem bore the motto "Proletarians of all countries, unite!" in both the Russian and Moksha and Erzya languages, reflecting the ethnic diversity of the Mordovian ASSR. The motto was a central tenet of Soviet ideology, emphasizing international solidarity among the working class.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The Mordovian ASSR was established on December 20, 1934, as part of the Soviet Union's policy of granting limited autonomy to various ethnic groups within its borders. The emblem was a symbol of the Mordovian ASSR's status as an autonomous republic within the RSFSR and its integration into the larger Soviet state.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Mordovian ASSR was transformed into the Republic of Mordovia, a federal subject of the Russian Federation. The emblem of the Mordovian ASSR was replaced by new symbols that reflected the republic's new status and identity within the Russian Federation.
