The emblem was adopted in 1937 and was used until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Design[edit | edit source]

The emblem of the Nakhchivan ASSR was based on the State Emblem of the Soviet Union and shared many common elements with the emblems of other Soviet republics. The design featured a red star, a hammer and sickle, and a rising sun, symbolizing the victory of communism and the unity of the workers and peasants.

Elements[edit | edit source]

  • Red Star: The red star at the top of the emblem represented the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the socialist ideology.
  • Hammer and Sickle: The hammer and sickle were symbols of the unity of the industrial workers and the peasants.
  • Rising Sun: The rising sun symbolized the future of the Soviet people and the bright future of communism.
  • Wheat and Cotton: The emblem was framed by sheaves of wheat and cotton, representing the agricultural wealth of the Nakhchivan region.
  • Red Banner: A red banner with the motto "Workers of the world, unite!" in both Azerbaijani and Russian.

The emblem included the name of the republic in both Azerbaijani and Russian. The Azerbaijani inscription read "Naxçıvan Muxtar Sovet Sosialist Respublikası," and the Russian inscription read "Нахичеванская Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика."

Historical Context[edit | edit source]

The Nakhchivan ASSR was established in 1924 as an autonomous region within the Azerbaijan SSR. The emblem was adopted in 1937, reflecting the Soviet Union's policy of granting a degree of cultural and administrative autonomy to its various ethnic regions while maintaining strict central control.

Dissolution[edit | edit source]

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Nakhchivan ASSR was transformed into the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic within the newly independent Republic of Azerbaijan. The emblem of the Nakhchivan ASSR was replaced by a new emblem reflecting the region's new status.
