Coat of arms of North Ossetian ASSR

The Emblem of the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official symbol of the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, a constituent republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in accordance with the general principles of socialist heraldry and was used until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Design[edit | edit source]

The emblem of the North Ossetian ASSR was based on the emblem of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, which in turn was inspired by the State Emblem of the Soviet Union. The emblem featured the following elements:

  • A red star at the top, symbolizing the victory of communism and the unity of the Soviet republics.
  • A hammer and sickle, representing the unity of the working class (industrial workers) and the peasantry (agricultural workers).
  • A rising sun, symbolizing the future of the Soviet people and the bright future of socialism.
  • Ears of wheat, which represented the agricultural wealth of the republic.
  • A red ribbon with the motto "Workers of the world, unite!" in both Russian and Ossetian.

Historical Context[edit | edit source]

The North Ossetian ASSR was established on July 7, 1924, as an autonomous republic within the RSFSR. The emblem was adopted to reflect the socialist ideals and the cultural identity of the Ossetian people within the framework of the Soviet Union. The design of the emblem was consistent with the principles of socialist heraldry, which emphasized the symbols of labor, unity, and the future.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The emblem was used on official documents, government buildings, and other state properties. It was also featured on the republic's currency, stamps, and other official insignia. The emblem served as a symbol of the North Ossetian ASSR's identity and its place within the larger Soviet Union.

Dissolution[edit | edit source]

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the North Ossetian ASSR was transformed into the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, a federal subject of the Russian Federation. The emblem of the North Ossetian ASSR was replaced by a new emblem that reflected the republic's new status and identity.
