The Russian Federation (Rossiyskaya Federatsiya), commonly known as Russia, is a country spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. History[edit | edit source]
Russia's history begins with the East Slavs, who emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. The Medieval state of Kievan Rus' formed in the 9th century but disintegrated in the 12th century. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history. Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Soviet Union was established, eventually becoming a superpower. The Soviet era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made satellite and the first human spaceflight. In 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved and the Russian Federation emerged as its legal successor state.
