Country is a geographical area that is recognized as a distinct entity in political geography. A country may be an independent sovereign state or part of a larger state, as a non-sovereign or formerly sovereign political division, or a geographic region associated with a previously independent or differentially associated collection of states.

Sovereign states[edit | edit source]

A sovereign state is a political entity that is represented by one centralized government that has sovereignty over a geographic area. International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, defined territory, one government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other sovereign states.

Non-sovereign countries[edit | edit source]

A non-sovereign country is a country that is not a sovereign state, it is a geographical area that is a non-sovereign division of a larger state. This can include areas that are the subjects of a dispute between countries, such as Kashmir.

Country subdivisions[edit | edit source]

A country subdivision is a high-level administrative division of a country. Examples of country subdivisions include states, provinces, counties, and territories.
