Coat of Arms of Udmurt ASSR

The Emblem of the Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official symbol of the Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Udmurt ASSR), a federal subject of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) within the Soviet Union. The emblem was used from the establishment of the Udmurt ASSR in 1934 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Design[edit | edit source]

The design of the emblem was based on the State Emblem of the Soviet Union, which was a common practice among the emblems of the various Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics (ASSRs) and Soviet Socialist Republics (SSRs). The emblem featured the following elements:

  • A red star at the top, symbolizing the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the unity of the Soviet republics.
  • A hammer and sickle, representing the unity of the workers and peasants.
  • A rising sun, symbolizing the future of the Soviet people and the bright future of socialism.
  • Sheaves of wheat, representing agriculture and the abundance of the land.
  • A red ribbon with the motto "Workers of the world, unite!" in both Russian and Udmurt.

Historical Context[edit | edit source]

The Udmurt ASSR was established on December 28, 1934, as part of the RSFSR. The creation of the emblem was part of the broader Soviet policy of promoting the identity of the various nationalities within the Soviet Union while maintaining the overarching Soviet identity. The emblem was used in official documents, government buildings, and other state-related contexts.

Changes and Evolution[edit | edit source]

Over the years, the emblem underwent several modifications to align with changes in Soviet heraldic standards and political directives. However, the core elements, such as the hammer and sickle, the red star, and the agricultural motifs, remained consistent.

Dissolution[edit | edit source]

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Udmurt ASSR was transformed into the Udmurt Republic, a federal subject of the Russian Federation. The emblem of the Udmurt ASSR was replaced by a new emblem reflecting the republic's new status and identity.
