Emblem of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic
The Emblem of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was the official state emblem of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR), a constituent republic of the Soviet Union. The emblem was adopted in 1919 and underwent several modifications until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Design[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Ukrainian SSR was heavily influenced by the Emblem of the Soviet Union. It featured traditional Soviet symbols such as the hammer and sickle, which represented the unity of the workers and peasants, and the red star, symbolizing the rule of the Communist Party and the victory of socialism and communism.
The central element of the emblem was a golden hammer and sickle placed on a red shield. Above the shield was a red star, and below it were golden rays emanating from the center. The shield was surrounded by a wreath of wheat ears, symbolizing the agricultural richness of Ukraine. A red ribbon with the motto "Proletarians of all countries, unite!" in both Ukrainian and Russian was wrapped around the wheat ears.
History[edit | edit source]
The first version of the emblem was adopted in 1919, shortly after the establishment of the Ukrainian SSR. The design was modified several times, with the most significant changes occurring in 1937 and 1949. The 1937 version included the addition of the red star and the motto in both Ukrainian and Russian. The 1949 version further refined the design, making it more consistent with the emblem of the Soviet Union.
Symbolism[edit | edit source]
The elements of the emblem were rich in symbolism:
- The hammer and sickle represented the unity of the industrial workers and the agricultural peasants.
- The red star symbolized the Communist Party and the victory of socialism.
- The wheat ears signified the agricultural wealth of Ukraine.
- The red ribbon with the motto "Proletarians of all countries, unite!" reflected the international solidarity of the working class.
Dissolution[edit | edit source]
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Ukrainian SSR ceased to exist, and the emblem was replaced by the Coat of arms of Ukraine, which features the trident (tryzub), a symbol with deep historical roots in Ukrainian history.
