Emcyt

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Emcyt is a chemotherapeutic agent used primarily in the treatment of prostate cancer. It is the trade name for the drug estramustine phosphate, which combines the properties of an alkylating agent and an estrogen. Emcyt is known for its ability to interfere with the growth of cancer cells, ultimately leading to their destruction.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Emcyt works by binding to microtubules and disrupting their function, which is essential for cell division. This disruption inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells. Additionally, the estrogen component of Emcyt can help in reducing the levels of testosterone, a hormone that can promote the growth of prostate cancer cells.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Emcyt is primarily indicated for the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer that is resistant to conventional hormone therapy. It is often used in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents to enhance its efficacy.

Administration[edit | edit source]

Emcyt is administered orally in the form of capsules. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the patient's condition, response to therapy, and the presence of any side effects.
