Emery–Nelson syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a combination of symptoms, including muscle weakness, developmental delay, and distinctive facial features. This condition falls under the broader category of congenital myopathies, which are a group of muscle disorders present at birth that primarily affect skeletal muscles, which are used for movement.

Symptoms and Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The hallmark of Emery–Nelson syndrome is a triad of symptoms: muscle weakness, developmental delays, and unique facial features. The muscle weakness is often noticeable from birth or early infancy and may affect the ability to achieve motor milestones such as sitting, standing, or walking. As a genetic disorder, Emery–Nelson syndrome is typically inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, meaning that an individual must inherit two copies of the mutated gene, one from each parent, to be affected.
