"Emily" is the seventh episode of the fifth season of the science fiction television series The X-Files. It originally aired on the Fox network on December 14, 1997. The episode was written by Vince Gilligan, John Shiban, and Frank Spotnitz, and directed by Kim Manners.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The episode continues the story from the previous episode, "Christmas Carol". Dana Scully discovers that she is the biological mother of a young girl named Emily Sim, who was conceived through in vitro fertilization using Scully's ova, which had been harvested during her abduction. Fox Mulder and Scully investigate the circumstances surrounding Emily's conception and her mysterious illness.

As the investigation progresses, Mulder and Scully uncover a conspiracy involving a group of men who are experimenting with human-alien hybrids. Emily's condition deteriorates, and despite their efforts, Mulder and Scully are unable to save her. The episode ends with Emily's death and Scully mourning the loss of the daughter she never knew she had.

Production[edit | edit source]

"Emily" was part of a two-part storyline, following "Christmas Carol". The episode was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, and featured special effects to depict Emily's illness and the alien hybrid experiments.

Themes[edit | edit source]

The episode explores themes of motherhood, loss, and the ethical implications of genetic engineering. It also delves into the ongoing mythology of The X-Files, particularly the government's involvement in alien hybrid experiments.

Reception[edit | edit source]

"Emily" received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the emotional depth of the story and the performances of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, while others felt that the episode did not advance the overall mythology of the series significantly.
