Vancouver is a major city in western Canada, located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. As the most populous city in the province, Vancouver is the eighth largest Canadian municipality. The city is named after British Captain George Vancouver, who explored the area in the 1790s. Vancouver has a diverse and multicultural population, and it is a prominent center for arts, culture, and commerce. The city's natural beauty, surrounded by water on three sides and mountains to the north, makes it a popular destination for outdoor activities and tourism.

History[edit | edit source]

The area of Vancouver was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The first European exploration was conducted by José María Narváez of Spain in 1791, followed by George Vancouver in 1792. The city itself was not founded until 1886, when it was incorporated as the City of Vancouver. It quickly grew as a result of immigration and the development of the transcontinental railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway, which reached the city in 1887.
