The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university with campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1908, UBC is British Columbia's oldest university. The university ranks among the top 20 public universities worldwide and is consistently recognized as a leading institution in Canada.

History[edit | edit source]

The University of British Columbia was established in 1908 as the McGill University College of British Columbia. It became the University of British Columbia in 1915. The university's first classes were held in the Fairview neighborhood of Vancouver in 1915, but it moved to its current location at Point Grey in 1925.

Early Years[edit | edit source]

The university's first president, Frank Wesbrook, played a significant role in its early development. The original campus plan was designed by the architectural firm Sharp and Thompson.

Expansion and Development[edit | edit source]

UBC expanded significantly after World War II, with the construction of new buildings and the establishment of new faculties. The university's Okanagan campus was opened in 2005, further expanding its reach.
