Enterococci

Enterococci are a genus of Gram-positive bacteria that are commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. They are of significant interest in both medicine and microbiology due to their role in infections, particularly those that are antibiotic-resistant. Enterococci can live harmlessly in the human gut, but they can also cause serious infections, especially in the urinary tract, blood, and wounds.

Enterococci are characterized by their ability to survive in harsh conditions, such as high salinity (salt concentration) and a wide range of temperatures. This resilience contributes to their importance in healthcare settings, where they can persist on surfaces and increase the risk of hospital-acquired infections.
