Geography[edit | edit source]
The Eola-Amity Hills AVA is situated in the central part of the Willamette Valley, encompassing parts of Polk and Yamhill counties. The AVA is named after the Eola Hills and the nearby town of Amity. The region is characterized by its rolling hills and diverse soil types, which include volcanic basalt, marine sedimentary rocks, and loess.
Climate[edit | edit source]
The climate of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA is influenced by the Van Duzer Corridor, a gap in the Coast Range that allows cool marine air to flow into the valley. This cooling effect moderates temperatures, providing a longer growing season and contributing to the development of complex flavors in the grapes. The region experiences warm summers and cool, wet winters, with an average annual rainfall of around 40 inches.

The soils in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA are diverse, with a mix of volcanic, marine sedimentary, and loess soils. The volcanic soils, primarily composed of basalt, are well-drained and rich in minerals, which contribute to the unique characteristics of the wines produced in the region. The marine sedimentary soils are also well-drained and add complexity to the wines.

The Eola-Amity Hills AVA is renowned for its production of Pinot Noir, which thrives in the region's climate and soils. Other grape varieties grown in the AVA include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Syrah. The wines from this region are known for their elegance, balance, and complexity.
