Epulonipiscium is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria that are notable for their large size and symbiotic relationship with surgeonfish. These bacteria are among the largest known prokaryotes, with some species reaching lengths of up to 600 micrometers. They are found in the intestinal tract of their fish hosts, where they play a role in digestion and nutrient absorption.

Epulonipiscium species are rod-shaped bacteria that can be seen with the naked eye. Unlike most bacteria, which are typically a few micrometers in size, Epulonipiscium can grow to be hundreds of micrometers long. The cell structure of Epulonipiscium is adapted to its large size. The bacteria have a highly convoluted membrane that increases the surface area available for nutrient absorption. This adaptation is necessary because diffusion alone would not be sufficient to supply nutrients to such a large cell.
