Ernest Lee "Ernie" Fletcher (born November 12, 1952) is an American physician and politician who served as the 60th Governor of Kentucky from 2003 to 2007. A member of the Republican Party, he was previously a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Kentucky's 6th congressional district from 1999 to 2003.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Fletcher was born in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He later attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, earning his MD degree.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical degree, Fletcher served as a physician in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain. Following his military service, he worked as a family practice physician in Lexington, Kentucky.

Kentucky House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

Fletcher began his political career in the Kentucky House of Representatives, serving from 1995 to 1999. During his tenure, he focused on healthcare and education issues.

United States House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

In 1998, Fletcher was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Kentucky's 6th congressional district. He served from 1999 until 2003. In Congress, he was a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and worked on healthcare reform and energy policy.

Governor of Kentucky[edit | edit source]

Fletcher was elected as the 60th Governor of Kentucky in 2003. His tenure was marked by efforts to reform the state's healthcare system and improve education. However, his administration was also marred by a hiring scandal, which led to several indictments and a pardon of his entire administration by Fletcher himself.

Post-gubernatorial career[edit | edit source]

After leaving office, Fletcher returned to the medical field and became involved in various healthcare initiatives. He has also remained active in political and civic affairs.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Fletcher is married to Glenna Foster Fletcher, and they have two children. He is a member of the Baptist church and has been involved in various community service activities.
