Ernst-Günther Baade

Ernst-Günther Baade (1904–1964) was a German astronomer known for his contributions to the field of astrophysics. Baade was born on May 24, 1904, in Berlin, Germany. He studied at the University of Berlin and later obtained his Ph.D. in astronomy from the same institution.

Baade's research focused on various aspects of stellar evolution and galactic structure. He made significant contributions to our understanding of supernovae and variable stars. Baade also played a key role in the development of the concept of stellar populations.

One of Baade's most notable achievements was his work on the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). In 1944, during World War II, Baade and his colleague Walter Baade proposed the existence of two distinct populations of stars in M31 based on their different metallicity levels. This groundbreaking discovery revolutionized our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.

Baade's research laid the foundation for many subsequent studies in the field of astrophysics. His work continues to influence astronomers and researchers to this day.
