Erythrityl tetranitrate

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Erythrityl Tetranitrate is a vasodilator that is commonly used in the treatment of angina pectoris, a condition characterized by chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart. It belongs to the class of drugs known as nitrates, which work by relaxing and widening blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow to the heart.

History[edit | edit source]

Erythrityl Tetranitrate was first synthesized in the late 19th century and has been used in medical practice for over a century. It was initially used in the treatment of angina pectoris due to its ability to dilate coronary arteries, thereby increasing blood flow to the heart.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Erythrityl Tetranitrate is a prodrug that is metabolized in the liver to release nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator. The release of NO leads to the relaxation of smooth muscle cells in the blood vessels, resulting in vasodilation. This increases blood flow to the heart and reduces the workload of the heart, thereby relieving symptoms of angina pectoris.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Erythrityl Tetranitrate is used in the management of angina pectoris. It is typically administered sublingually (under the tongue) for rapid absorption and onset of action. The drug is also used in the prevention of angina attacks, particularly in patients with chronic stable angina.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Erythrityl Tetranitrate include headache, flushing, dizziness, and hypotension. In rare cases, it can cause severe hypotension and reflex tachycardia, a rapid heart rate in response to low blood pressure.
