Estelle Bennett (July 22, 1941 – February 11, 2009) was an American singer best known as a member of the girl group The Ronettes. The group was one of the most popular acts of the 1960s and was known for their work with record producer Phil Spector.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Estelle Bennett was born in New York City, New York. She was the elder sister of Ronnie Spector, the lead singer of The Ronettes. Estelle and Ronnie, along with their cousin Nedra Talley, formed the original lineup of the group. Estelle attended George Washington High School and later studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Career with The Ronettes[edit | edit source]

The Ronettes were formed in the early 1960s and quickly gained popularity with their distinctive sound and style. They signed with Philles Records, the label owned by Phil Spector, and released a series of hit singles. Some of their most famous songs include "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", and "Walking in the Rain".

Estelle Bennett's role in the group was primarily as a backing vocalist, but her presence and style contributed significantly to the group's image. The Ronettes were known for their beehive hairstyles, tight dresses, and sultry performances, which set them apart from other girl groups of the time.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After The Ronettes disbanded in 1967, Estelle Bennett struggled with mental health issues, including schizophrenia and anorexia nervosa. Despite these challenges, she occasionally reunited with her sister Ronnie for performances and special events.

In 2007, The Ronettes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing their influence on the music industry and their lasting legacy. Estelle Bennett's contributions to the group were celebrated during the induction ceremony.

Estelle Bennett passed away on February 11, 2009, in Englewood, New Jersey. She is remembered as a key figure in one of the most iconic girl groups of the 1960s.
