Etidronate

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Etidronate is a type of bisphosphonate medication that is primarily used in the treatment of osteoporosis and Paget's disease. It works by slowing down the process of bone loss, thereby increasing bone mass and reducing the risk of fractures.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Etidronate functions by binding to hydroxyapatite in bone matrix, thereby inhibiting the dissolution of crystals. It also prevents the formation and aggregation of calcium phosphate crystals. In addition, it inhibits osteoclast activity, which is responsible for bone resorption.
