Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Eugène Soubeiran was born into a family with a strong background in pharmacy. He pursued his education in the sciences, showing early interest in chemistry. Soubeiran completed his studies at the École de Pharmacie in Paris, where he was influenced by prominent scientists of the time.

Career and Contributions[edit | edit source]

Soubeiran's most notable contribution to science was his independent discovery of chloroform in 1831, around the same time as Samuel Guthrie in the United States and Justus von Liebig in Germany. His work involved the distillation of chlorine with ethanol, which led to the creation of chloroform. This discovery was monumental in the field of surgery and anesthesiology, as chloroform became a widely used anesthetic.

In addition to his work on chloroform, Soubeiran published numerous papers on various topics in chemistry and pharmacology. He was also a dedicated educator, teaching at several institutions and contributing to the training of future chemists and pharmacists.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Eugène Soubeiran's discovery of chloroform marked a significant advancement in medical science, particularly in the practice of surgery. His work paved the way for safer and more effective surgical procedures, significantly reducing the pain and suffering of patients during operations. Soubeiran's contributions to chemistry and pharmacology are still recognized today, and he remains a respected figure in the history of science.

Death[edit | edit source]

Eugène Soubeiran passed away on November 9, 1859. His legacy continues through the ongoing use of chloroform in various applications, although its use as an anesthetic has been largely replaced due to its potential health risks.
