Crotamiton

Crotamiton is a drug that is primarily used as a scabicidal (for treating scabies) and as a general antipruritic (anti-itching agent). It is a prescription lotion based medicine that is applied to the skin. The drug is sold under the brand name Eurax, which is produced by Ranbaxy Laboratories in the United States.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Crotamiton works by killing parasitic mites that cause scabies. It's exact mechanism of action is unknown, but it is believed to act as a neurotoxin to the mites. The drug is applied topically to the skin, and is able to penetrate into the burrows of the mites to kill them.

In addition to its scabicidal action, Crotamiton also has antipruritic properties. It is thought to work by producing a cooling effect as it evaporates on the skin, which helps to relieve itching.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Crotamiton is primarily used to treat scabies, a condition caused by a tiny mite that burrows into the skin and causes intense itching. The drug is applied to the entire body, excluding the face, and is left on for 24 hours. This process is usually repeated for a total of two applications.

In addition to scabies, Crotamiton can also be used to relieve itching associated with various other skin conditions, such as eczema, dermatitis, and rashes due to allergic reactions.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medications, Crotamiton can cause side effects. The most common side effect is skin irritation, including redness, rash, and itching. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur, such as severe allergic reactions.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before using Crotamiton, individuals should inform their healthcare provider if they have any allergies, or if they are pregnant or breastfeeding. The drug should not be applied to broken or inflamed skin, or to the eyes, nose, mouth, or genitals.
