European Molecular Biology Organization
European Molecular Biology Organization
The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is an organization of more than 1,800 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences. The organization was founded in 1964 and is headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany. EMBO's mission is to support talented researchers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.
History[edit | edit source]
EMBO was established in 1964 by a group of European scientists, including Max Perutz, John Kendrew, and François Jacob, who recognized the need for a European organization to promote molecular biology. The founding of EMBO was a response to the rapid advancements in the field and the need for a collaborative network to support and disseminate research.
Activities[edit | edit source]
EMBO's activities are diverse and aimed at fostering scientific excellence. These include:
- **Fellowships**: EMBO offers postdoctoral and short-term fellowships to support researchers at different stages of their careers.
- **Courses and Workshops**: EMBO organizes numerous scientific courses and workshops to provide training and facilitate the exchange of knowledge.
- **EMBO Young Investigator Programme**: This program supports young group leaders in the early stages of setting up their independent laboratories.
- **Publications**: EMBO publishes several scientific journals, including The EMBO Journal, EMBO Reports, and Molecular Systems Biology.
- **Science Policy**: EMBO engages in science policy activities to influence the research environment and funding landscape in Europe.
Membership[edit | edit source]
EMBO membership is a prestigious recognition of scientific excellence. Members are elected annually based on their contributions to the life sciences. Membership is for life and includes some of the most distinguished researchers in the field.
Governance[edit | edit source]
EMBO is governed by a Council, which is responsible for the overall direction and strategy of the organization. The Council is composed of EMBO members who are elected by their peers. The day-to-day operations are managed by the EMBO Director and the EMBO Office in Heidelberg.
