Exit International
Exit International is a non-profit organization that advocates for the legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Founded in 1997 by Dr. Philip Nitschke, the organization is based in Australia but has a global membership. Exit International provides information and guidance on end-of-life choices, aiming to ensure that individuals have access to reliable information and safe means to end their lives if they choose to do so. The organization is known for its development of the Peaceful Pill Handbook, a manual that provides information on assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia for the elderly and those suffering from terminal illness or severe physical conditions.
History[edit | edit source]
Exit International was established in response to the growing demand for information and practical assistance regarding voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide. The organization's founder, Dr. Philip Nitschke, became the first physician in the world to administer a legal, lethal voluntary injection under the short-lived Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995 (Northern Territory, Australia). Following the overturning of this act, Nitschke founded Exit International to continue advocating for individuals' rights to die with dignity.
Activities[edit | edit source]
Exit International conducts a range of activities to promote its cause, including:
- Publishing the Peaceful Pill Handbook, which provides detailed information on methods of voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.
- Organizing workshops and seminars worldwide to educate people about end-of-life options.
- Advocating for legislative change to allow for voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.
- Providing an online forum for members to discuss end-of-life issues and share experiences.
Controversy[edit | edit source]
Exit International's activities have been met with controversy. Critics argue that the organization promotes suicide and that its resources could be used by vulnerable individuals to end their lives prematurely. Supporters, however, contend that the organization plays a crucial role in providing information and support to those who are suffering and wish to exercise control over their own death.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of Exit International varies by country. In Australia, the organization operates in a legal gray area, with its activities being closely monitored by authorities. In other countries, the organization's activities and the distribution of the Peaceful Pill Handbook may be restricted or banned outright.
