Expansion

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Expansion is a term used in various fields of study, including physics, mathematics, and biology. In a general sense, it refers to the process of becoming larger or more extensive. In specific contexts, it can have more specialized meanings.

Physics[edit | edit source]

In physics, expansion often refers to the increase in volume of a substance due to the increase in its temperature, a process known as thermal expansion. This is a fundamental concept in thermodynamics and is used in a variety of applications, from the design of bridges and buildings to the functioning of thermometers.

Mathematics[edit | edit source]

In mathematics, expansion can refer to several different processes. In algebra, for example, it can refer to the process of expanding a product of two or more factors into a sum of terms. In calculus, it can refer to the process of expressing a function as a series of terms, known as a series expansion.

Biology[edit | edit source]

In biology, expansion can refer to the process of growth or enlargement of an organism or part of an organism. This can occur through cell division, known as mitosis, or through the addition of extracellular material, as in the growth of bone or cartilage.
