Eye discharge
Eye discharge, also known as rheum, is a combination of mucus, oil, skin cells and other debris that accumulates in the corner of your eye while you sleep. It can be wet and sticky or dry and crusty, depending on how much of the liquid in the discharge has evaporated.
Causes[edit | edit source]
Eye discharge can be a sign of a number of different conditions, including:
- Dry eye: This condition can cause a variety of eye symptoms, including discharge.
- Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, this infection causes the eye to produce a sticky discharge.
- Blepharitis: This condition causes the eyelids to become inflamed and create a sticky discharge.
- Corneal ulcer: This is a serious condition that can cause a thick, pus-like discharge from the eye.
- Dacryocystitis: This is an infection of the tear sac, which can cause a pus-like discharge from the eye.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of eye discharge can vary depending on the cause. They may include:
- A feeling of something in the eye
- Redness or swelling
- Itching or irritation
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for eye discharge will depend on the underlying cause. This may include:
- Antibiotics: If the discharge is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.
- Antihistamines: If the discharge is due to an allergic reaction, antihistamines may help.
- Artificial tears: These can help to soothe dry eyes and reduce discharge.
- Warm compresses: These can help to soothe irritated eyes and loosen crusty discharge.
Prevention[edit | edit source]
To help prevent eye discharge:
- Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands
- Use a clean tissue or cloth to wipe away discharge
- Wash your hands regularly
- Avoid sharing towels or washcloths
- Replace your eye makeup regularly
