Fascia of Perineum[edit | edit source]

Fascia of perineum (highlighted in red)

The Fascia of Perineum is a complex structure in the human body that plays a crucial role in the anatomy of the perineum. It is a fibrous layer that covers or binds together parts of the body such as muscles, organs, and other soft structures. The fascia of the perineum is divided into two main parts: the superficial perineal fascia and the deep perineal fascia.

Superficial Perineal Fascia[edit | edit source]

The Superficial Perineal Fascia is a layer of the fascia of the perineum that is found in the superficial perineal pouch. It is further divided into two layers: the fatty superficial layer (Camper's fascia) and the membranous deep layer (Colles' fascia).

Functions[edit | edit source]

The fascia of the perineum serves several important functions in the body. It provides support and protection to the organs and structures in the perineum. It also plays a role in the movement of muscles and the flow of blood and lymph in the area.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The fascia of the perineum is clinically significant as it can be involved in various medical conditions. For instance, damage to the fascia can lead to perineal hernias. Infections can also spread along the fascial planes, leading to conditions such as Fournier's gangrene.
