Fastin

Fastin is a brand name for the drug phentermine, which is used as an appetite suppressant to aid in weight loss. Phentermine is a stimulant that works by affecting the central nervous system to suppress appetite. It is typically prescribed for short-term use in combination with diet and exercise for individuals who are obese or overweight and have certain health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Phentermine, sold under the brand name Fastin, is indicated for the short-term management of obesity. It is recommended for use in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Phentermine is intended for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with obesity-related comorbidities.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Phentermine works by stimulating the release of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters help to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, leading to decreased food intake.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of phentermine (Fastin) may include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Nervousness or restlessness

Less common but more serious side effects may include:

  • Primary pulmonary hypertension
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Increased risk of dependence or abuse

It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting phentermine to discuss potential side effects and risks.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Phentermine (Fastin) is contraindicated in individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, or a known hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic amines. It should not be used in combination with other weight loss medications or certain antidepressants.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Phentermine may interact with other medications, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and certain antihypertensive drugs. It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking before starting phentermine.
