Father's Day

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March, April and June according to the home nation's culture. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Mother's Day, Siblings Day and Grandparents Day.

Origins

The tradition of Father's Day started in the United States in the early 20th century. It was first celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington, but it was not until 1972–58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official–that the day became a nationwide holiday in the United States.

International history and traditions

Father's Day is celebrated in many countries worldwide. In some countries, it is celebrated on the same day as Ascension Day. In other countries, such as in Italy, it is celebrated on Saint Joseph's Day (March 19). In many countries, the date of Father's Day varies, but the manner of observance usually involves giving gifts to fathers and family activities.
