Femto
Femto is a prefix in the metric system denoting a factor of 10^-15. It was adopted in 1964 by the International System of Units (SI). The prefix comes from the Danish word femten, meaning fifteen.
Applications[edit | edit source]
Femto is commonly used in various scientific fields to measure extremely small quantities. Some of the notable applications include:
- Femtosecond: A unit of time equal to 10^-15 seconds. It is used in ultrafast laser science and time-resolved spectroscopy.
- Femtometer: A unit of length equal to 10^-15 meters, also known as a fermi. It is used in nuclear physics to measure the size of atomic nuclei.
- Femtoampere: A unit of electric current equal to 10^-15 amperes. It is used in electronics and nanotechnology.
Related Concepts[edit | edit source]
Femto is part of a series of metric prefixes used to denote various orders of magnitude. Other related prefixes include:
- Pico (10^-12)
- Nano (10^-9)
- Micro (10^-6)
- Milli (10^-3)
- Centi (10^-2)
- Deci (10^-1)
