Fennville AVA

Fennville AVA is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in the southwestern part of the state of Michigan, in the United States. It was established as an AVA in 1981, making it one of the earliest designated wine regions in Michigan. The AVA is entirely contained within the larger Lake Michigan Shore AVA.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Fennville AVA is situated in Allegan County, near the town of Fennville. The region is characterized by its proximity to Lake Michigan, which has a significant moderating effect on the climate. This proximity helps to extend the growing season and provides a favorable environment for viticulture.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The climate of the Fennville AVA is classified as a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. The lake effect from Lake Michigan helps to moderate temperatures, reducing the risk of frost during the growing season and providing a longer period for grape ripening. This climate is conducive to growing a variety of grapes, including both Vitis vinifera and hybrid grape varieties.

Soil[edit | edit source]

The soils in the Fennville AVA are predominantly sandy loam, which provides good drainage and is ideal for grapevines. The soil composition, combined with the region's topography, contributes to the unique terroir of the area.

Grapes and Wine[edit | edit source]

The Fennville AVA is known for producing a diverse range of wines. Common grape varieties grown in the region include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc. The AVA is also known for its production of fruit wines, particularly those made from blueberries and cherries, which are also grown in the region.

Wineries[edit | edit source]

Several wineries operate within the Fennville AVA, each contributing to the area's reputation for quality wine production. These wineries offer a variety of wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region's terroir.
