Fibular Vein

The fibular vein, also known as the peroneal vein, is a vein in the leg that drains blood from the lateral compartment of the leg.

The Fibular Vein (Peroneal Vein) is a vein located in the leg. It is responsible for draining blood from the lateral compartment of the leg, which includes the fibula and the muscles that surround it. The fibular vein is a deep vein, meaning it is located beneath the muscles and not visible from the surface of the skin.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The fibular vein begins at the foot, where it is formed by the union of several smaller veins that drain the lateral side of the foot and the calf muscles. It runs up the leg, parallel to the fibula, and eventually drains into the posterior tibial vein to form the popliteal vein.

The fibular vein drains into the posterior tibial vein to form the popliteal vein.

The fibular vein is accompanied along its course by a similarly named artery, the fibular artery. Together, they form the fibular (peroneal) neurovascular bundle.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its deep location, the fibular vein is not commonly affected by varicose veins. However, it can be involved in conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), where a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the leg.
