Finis J. Garrett (August 26, 1875 – May 25, 1956) was an influential American politician and lawyer who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Tennessee for nearly 24 years. A member of the Democratic Party, Garrett was known for his eloquence, legal acumen, and commitment to progressive legislation.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Finis J. Garrett was born in Weakley County, Tennessee, where he attended local schools. He later pursued higher education at Vanderbilt University, earning a degree in law. After his graduation, he was admitted to the bar and began his practice in Tennessee.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Garrett's political career began when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1904, representing Tennessee's 9th congressional district. He was re-elected multiple times, serving from 1905 to 1929. During his tenure, Garrett was noted for his advocacy on behalf of agricultural interests and his support for progressive reforms.

He played a significant role in legislative matters, including his service on various committees. His legal background helped him in shaping and debating legislation. Garrett was also a proponent of the Prohibition movement, reflecting the sentiments of his constituents at the time.

In addition to his legislative duties, Garrett was chosen as the Minority Leader for the Democrats in the House from 1923 until his retirement in 1929. His leadership was marked by efforts to unify the party and to challenge the then-dominant Republican Party.
