Fish oil
Fish oil is a dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids — substances your body needs for many functions, from muscle activity to cell growth. Omega-3 fatty acids are derived from food. They can't be manufactured in the body. Fish oil contains two omega-3s called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
Health Benefits of Fish Oil[edit | edit source]
Fish oil supplements have been promoted as easy way to protect the heart, ease inflammation, improve mental health, and lengthen life. Such claims are one reason why Americans spend more than $1 billion a year on over-the-counter fish oil. However, the science is mixed.
Heart Health[edit | edit source]
Some studies in adults suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may help treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. However, more research is needed.
Mental Health[edit | edit source]
Some studies suggest that fish oil supplements might help people with depression. More research is needed to fully understand the benefits.
Inflammation[edit | edit source]
Fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties and can help with symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Risks and Considerations[edit | edit source]
Fish oil can cause side effects including belching, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, loose stools, rash, and nosebleeds. Taking fish oil supplements with meals or freezing them can often decrease these side effects.
