Flavin adenine dinucleotide synthetase 1

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Flavin adenine dinucleotide synthetase 1 (FADS1) is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the FADS1 gene. It is involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Function[edit | edit source]

FADS1 is a member of the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) gene family. Desaturase enzymes regulate unsaturation of fatty acids through the introduction of double bonds between defined methylenic carbons. The protein encoded by this gene is a key enzyme in fatty acid metabolism that catalyzes the synthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids from saturated fatty acids.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Variations in this gene are associated with lower levels of some biomarkers of inflammation, which may be beneficial for long-term health. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in this gene are associated with variations in plasma and cell membrane levels of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are implicated in inflammatory responses and other aspects of health.
