Flor de Caña
Flor de Caña is a brand of rum produced in Nicaragua. It is one of the most recognized and awarded rums in the world, known for its high quality and distinctive flavor. The brand is produced by Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, which has been in operation since 1890.
History[edit | edit source]
Flor de Caña was founded in 1890 by Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, an Italian entrepreneur who immigrated to Nicaragua. The distillery was established at the base of the San Cristóbal Volcano, the tallest and one of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua. The volcanic soil, climate, and water contribute to the unique characteristics of Flor de Caña rum.
Production Process[edit | edit source]
Flor de Caña rum is made from sugarcane grown in the rich volcanic soil of Nicaragua. The production process includes the following steps:
- **Harvesting**: The sugarcane is harvested and processed to extract the juice.
- **Fermentation**: The sugarcane juice is fermented using a proprietary strain of yeast.
- **Distillation**: The fermented juice is distilled in a continuous column still.
- **Aging**: The rum is aged in small American white oak barrels that were previously used to age bourbon. The aging process takes place in a natural environment without the use of artificial accelerants.
- **Blending**: The aged rums are blended to create the final product.
