Flukes
Flukes are a type of parasite that belong to the class Trematoda. They are flat, oval-shaped worms that can infect various parts of the body in humans and animals. The most common types of flukes are liver flukes, lung flukes, and intestinal flukes.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Flukes are known for their complex life cycles, which involve multiple hosts and stages of development. They are typically found in the blood, liver, or lungs of their hosts, but can also infect other organs. Flukes can cause a variety of health problems, including liver disease, lung disease, and intestinal disease.
Types of Flukes[edit | edit source]
Liver Flukes[edit | edit source]
Liver flukes are a type of fluke that primarily infects the liver. The most common types of liver flukes are the Fasciola hepatica and the Clonorchis sinensis. These parasites can cause a condition known as fascioliasis, which can lead to severe liver damage if left untreated.
Lung Flukes[edit | edit source]
Lung flukes, also known as Paragonimus westermani, primarily infect the lungs. They can cause a condition known as paragonimiasis, which can lead to symptoms such as coughing, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
Intestinal Flukes[edit | edit source]
Intestinal flukes are a type of fluke that primarily infects the intestines. The most common types of intestinal flukes are the Fasciolopsis buski and the Heterophyes heterophyes. These parasites can cause a condition known as fasciolopsiasis, which can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and malnutrition.
Prevention and Treatment[edit | edit source]
Prevention of fluke infections primarily involves proper sanitation and food preparation. This includes thoroughly cooking all seafood, avoiding raw watercress and other freshwater plants, and avoiding contact with contaminated water.
Treatment for fluke infections typically involves antiparasitic medications, such as praziquantel or triclabendazole. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the flukes.
