Foliar feed

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Foliar feed is a technique of feeding plants by applying liquid fertilizer directly to their leaves. It has been known to be especially effective in providing nutrients to plants quickly, and is used as a supplement to the regular fertilizing routine of the plants. The process is known to work well because plants absorb nutrients more efficiently through their leaf surfaces than through their roots.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of foliar feeding was first introduced in the 1950s. It was discovered during a research experiment that plants are able to absorb essential elements through their leaves. The absorption takes place through their stomata and also through their epidermis. Elements are then transported within the plant to where they are most needed.

Process[edit | edit source]

The process of foliar feeding involves spraying a liquid fertilizer solution onto the leaves of plants. This is typically done in the early morning or late evening when the stomata are open and the solution can be absorbed. The solution should be diluted according to the instructions on the fertilizer package to prevent leaf burn.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

Foliar feeding can provide a number of benefits to plants. It can help to correct nutrient deficiencies, boost overall plant health, and increase crop yields. It is particularly beneficial for giving plants a quick boost during critical periods such as flowering or fruiting.

Limitations[edit | edit source]

While foliar feeding can provide quick results, it is not a substitute for healthy soil. Nutrients need to be provided to plants in the soil for long-term health and productivity. Overuse of foliar feeds can also lead to a buildup of salts on the leaf surface which can cause damage.
