Forest Hills

Forest Hills is a residential neighborhood located in the borough of Queens in New York City. Known for its verdant hills, well-maintained gardens, and architecturally diverse homes, Forest Hills is a blend of urban living and suburban tranquility.

History

Forest Hills was once the home of the Lenape Native Americans, and later became the site of British colonial farms in the 17th century. In the early 20th century, the Queensboro Corporation began developing the area into a residential neighborhood, with the vision of creating a "garden city" in Queens. The neighborhood was named "Forest Hills" for its proximity to Forest Park.

Architecture

Forest Hills is known for its varied architecture. The neighborhood is home to the Forest Hills Gardens, a private community that features some of the city's most notable examples of Tudor architecture. The area also boasts a variety of single-family homes, apartment buildings, and co-ops, many of which were designed in the Art Deco and Colonial Revival styles.

Forest Hills is home to a vibrant cultural scene. The Forest Hills Stadium, a historic outdoor concert venue, has hosted a number of famous musicians and bands. The neighborhood also offers a variety of dining and shopping options, with a concentration of boutiques and restaurants along Austin Street.

Forest Hills is also known for its recreational opportunities. The neighborhood is adjacent to Forest Park, a large city park that offers hiking trails, sports fields, and a golf course. The West Side Tennis Club, which once hosted the U.S. Open, is also located in Forest Hills.

Education

Forest Hills is served by the New York City Department of Education. The neighborhood is home to several public and private schools, including Forest Hills High School and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School. The Queens Public Library operates the Forest Hills branch.

Transportation

Forest Hills is well-served by public transportation. The neighborhood is served by the MTA's E, F, M, and R trains, as well as several bus lines. The Long Island Rail Road's Forest Hills station provides commuter rail service to Manhattan and Long Island.

Notable Residents

Over the years, Forest Hills has been home to many notable residents, including musicians Simon & Garfunkel, comedian Ray Romano, and former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
