Formoterol fumarate
Formoterol Fumarate is a long-acting beta2 agonist (LABA) used in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is marketed under various brand names including Foradil, Oxeze, and many others.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Formoterol Fumarate is a selective beta2-adrenergic agonist. Its primary effect is to relax the smooth muscle in the bronchus and bronchioles, thereby opening up the airways and improving airflow to and from the lungs. It also inhibits the release of histamine and other mediators of inflammation from mast cells in the lungs.
Clinical Use[edit | edit source]
Formoterol Fumarate is used in the long-term management of asthma and COPD. It is often used in combination with inhaled corticosteroids such as budesonide. The combination of a LABA and a corticosteroid is more effective in controlling asthma symptoms than either drug alone.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of Formoterol Fumarate include palpitations, tremor, and headache. Less common side effects include hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, and insomnia. Rare but serious side effects include paradoxical bronchospasm, cardiac arrhythmias, and anaphylaxis.
Contraindications[edit | edit source]
Formoterol Fumarate is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Formoterol Fumarate may interact with other drugs including beta-blockers, diuretics, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). These interactions can increase the risk of side effects or reduce the effectiveness of the drug.
