Fort Worth is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the fifth-largest city in Texas and the 13th-largest city in the United States. Fort Worth is the county seat of Tarrant County, with portions extending into Denton, Parker, and Wise counties.

Fort Worth was established in 1849 as an army outpost on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. The city was named after General William Jenkins Worth who served in the Mexican-American War. Fort Worth became a bustling trading post for cowboys at the end of the Chisholm Trail. Thanks to the rich soil and ranching, it became known as "Cowtown."

The economy of Fort Worth is diverse, encompassing sectors such as aerospace, education, government, healthcare, manufacturing, and technology. Major companies headquartered in Fort Worth include American Airlines, Bell Helicopter, and Lockheed Martin.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Fort Worth is home to several museums designed by internationally recognized architects. The Kimbell Art Museum, designed by Louis Kahn, is one of the top attractions. The city also hosts the Fort Worth Stockyards, known for its rodeo and the famous Billy Bob's Texas, a popular country music club.

Fort Worth has a number of educational institutions, including Texas Christian University (TCU) and Texas Wesleyan University. The Fort Worth Independent School District serves most of the city, along with other districts such as Keller, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw, and Crowley.

Fort Worth is served by several major highways and has a variety of transportation options including buses operated by the Fort Worth Transportation Authority and the TEXRail commuter line. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport provides international and domestic flights.

As of the 2020 census, Fort Worth had a population of 918,915. The racial makeup of the city was diverse, and it has a growing population due to its economic opportunities and cultural offerings.

Government[edit | edit source]

Fort Worth operates under a council-manager form of government. The city council consists of the mayor and eight council members elected from districts.
