François Mitterrand[edit | edit source]
François Maurice Adrien Marie Mitterrand (26 October 1916 – 8 January 1996) was a French statesman who served as President of France from 1981 to 1995, the longest time in office of any French president. He was the first figure from the left elected as President of France under the Fifth Republic.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
François Mitterrand was born in Jarnac, Charente, into a conservative Catholic family. He studied at the Lycée Saint-Paul in Angoulême and later at the Lycée Henri-IV in Paris. Mitterrand went on to study law and political science at the University of Paris.

Early Political Involvement[edit | edit source]
Mitterrand's political career began in the 1930s. He was initially involved with the right-wing nationalist movement, the Croix-de-Feu, but later shifted towards the left. During World War II, he was captured by the Germans but managed to escape and joined the French Resistance.
Rise to Prominence[edit | edit source]
After the war, Mitterrand held various ministerial positions in the Fourth Republic, including Minister of Veterans and War Victims, Minister of Overseas France, and Minister of the Interior. He was a member of the National Assembly and became a prominent figure in the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO).
Presidency[edit | edit source]
Mitterrand was elected President of France in 1981, defeating the incumbent Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. His election marked a significant shift in French politics, as he was the first socialist president of the Fifth Republic. During his presidency, Mitterrand implemented several key reforms, including the abolition of the death penalty, decentralization of government, and nationalization of key industries.
Domestic Policies[edit | edit source]
Mitterrand's domestic policies focused on social reform and economic modernization. He introduced the "110 Propositions for France," which included measures to increase workers' rights, expand social welfare, and promote cultural development.
Foreign Policy[edit | edit source]
In foreign policy, Mitterrand was a strong advocate for European integration. He played a crucial role in the creation of the European Union and supported the Maastricht Treaty. Mitterrand also maintained a firm stance against the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Mitterrand's presidency is often remembered for its significant impact on French society and politics. He was a key figure in the transformation of the French left and the modernization of the French economy. His tenure also saw the rise of the Front National, a far-right political party, which challenged the traditional political landscape.
