Biography

Francesco Illy was born in Timișoara, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Romania). In Trieste, he founded Illycaffè, initially focusing on producing high-quality coffee.

Illy was not only a businessman but also an innovator. He invented the "Illetta" in 1935, the precursor to modern espresso machines. This invention revolutionized the way espresso was made, introducing automatic water dosing and high pressure to extract coffee, which enhanced its flavor and aroma.
