Francisco G. Cigarroa
Francisco G. Cigarroa is an American transplant surgeon and academic administrator. He is known for his contributions to the field of medicine and his leadership roles in various academic institutions.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Francisco G. Cigarroa was born in Laredo, Texas. He attended Yale University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in biology. He then went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Cigarroa completed his residency in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He further specialized in pediatric surgery and transplant surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Cigarroa has performed numerous liver transplants, kidney transplants, and other complex surgical procedures.
Academic Leadership[edit | edit source]
In 2000, Cigarroa became the President of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). During his tenure, he focused on expanding the institution's research capabilities and improving patient care. In 2009, he was appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Texas System, where he served until 2015. As Chancellor, Cigarroa was instrumental in launching the "Framework for Advancing Excellence," a strategic plan aimed at enhancing the quality of education and research across the UT System.
Contributions to Medicine[edit | edit source]
Cigarroa has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and has been involved in various research projects related to transplantation and surgical techniques. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.

Throughout his career, Cigarroa has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to medicine and education. These include the Hispanic Heritage Award for Leadership and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
