Frank Knox
Frank Knox (January 1, 1874 – April 28, 1944) was an American newspaper editor and publisher, politician, and Secretary of the Navy. He was a prominent figure in the early 20th century, known for his contributions to journalism and his role in the United States Navy during World War II.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Frank Knox was born William Franklin Knox in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Alma College in Michigan, where he developed an interest in journalism. After graduating, he began his career in the newspaper industry.
Career in Journalism[edit | edit source]
Knox's career in journalism started with various small newspapers. He eventually became the editor and publisher of the Chicago Daily News, where he gained a reputation for his editorial skills and business acumen. Under his leadership, the newspaper became one of the most influential publications in the United States.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Knox was an active member of the Republican Party. He ran for Vice President of the United States in 1936 as the running mate of Alf Landon, although they were defeated by the incumbent President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice President John Nance Garner.

In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Knox as Secretary of the Navy. Despite their political differences, Roosevelt valued Knox's experience and leadership. As Secretary of the Navy, Knox played a crucial role in expanding and modernizing the Navy during World War II. He was instrumental in the planning and execution of naval operations in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Frank Knox died on April 28, 1944, while still serving as Secretary of the Navy. He is remembered for his significant contributions to the United States Navy and his impact on American journalism.
