Freddy Maertens
Freddy Maertens (born 13 February 1952 in Nieuwpoort, Belgium) is a former Belgian professional road bicycle racer. He is considered one of the most talented and successful riders of the 1970s and early 1980s. His career was marked by both outstanding victories and notable controversies.

Maertens turned professional in 1973 and quickly established himself as a dominant sprinter and classics specialist. Throughout his career, he won a total of 142 professional races, a testament to his versatility and skill across different types of races.
Major Victories[edit | edit source]
Maertens' list of achievements includes two World Road Race Championships (1976, 1981), and he was the overall winner of the Vuelta a España in 1977. He also secured numerous classics victories, including the Paris–Roubaix, Milan–San Remo, and Gent–Wevelgem. Maertens was particularly dominant in the Tour de France, where he won the green jersey (points classification) three times (1976, 1978, 1981) and amassed a total of 15 stage wins over his career.
