Freeman is a city in Hutchinson County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,306 at the 2020 census. Freeman is known for its rich cultural heritage and serves as a hub for the surrounding rural communities.

Freeman was founded in 1879 by German-Russian immigrants. The city was named after the concept of "freedom" cherished by its founders. Freeman has a strong Mennonite heritage, which is reflected in its cultural events and institutions.
