Frenchay

Frenchay is a suburb of Bristol, England, situated to the north east of the city. It is known for its hospital, Frenchay Hospital, which was one of the largest in the UK until its services were transferred to Southmead Hospital in 2014.

Frenchay was first recorded in 1257 as Fromscawe and later as Fromeshaw, meaning the wood on the Frome. The village was part of the civil parish of Winterbourne, and the ecclesiastical parish of Stapleton until 1844 when it became a parish in its own right.

Frenchay Hospital[edit | edit source]

Frenchay Hospital was a major hospital in Frenchay, Bristol, England. It was situated on Frenchay Park Road, which is part of the Bristol ring road, near the junction with the M32 motorway. The hospital was managed by the North Bristol NHS Trust.

Notable buildings[edit | edit source]

Frenchay is home to several notable buildings, including Frenchay Manor House, a Grade II listed building, and Frenchay Park House, which was used as a hospital during the Second World War.

Education[edit | edit source]

Frenchay is served by several schools, including Frenchay Church of England Primary School and the University of the West of England, which has a campus in the area.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Frenchay is well served by public transport, with regular bus services to and from Bristol city centre. The area is also close to the M32 motorway, providing easy access to the rest of the country.
